Have you always dreamed of becoming a flight attendant and all the great benefits of the job, but the timing wasn’t right? Do you still have that dream but wonder if you missed your window of opportunity?

Starting a brand new career after the age of 40 can seem intimidating, and I’m here to let you know that the window is not only open but wide open and waiting for you.

Once the kids are off to college or somewhat self-sufficient, and you can finally follow your dreams, you now have a chance to become a flight attendant.

So many people wonder if they have exceeded the flight attendant age limit.

How old is too old to become a flight attendant? There is no age limit to becoming a flight attendant. As long as you can keep up with the job’s physical demands, age is nothing but a number.

Is 50 Too Old To Become A Flight Attendant?

50 is not to old to become a flight attendant, and neither is 60 plus.

When heading off to initial flight attendant training, I walked to the back galley and introduced myself as a new trainee.

The crew was super friendly and showed me around. This one flight attendant seemed to be around my grandmother’s age, and I asked her how long she had been flying. I expected her to give me a number like 30 or more years, and she said, “I’m junior. I have only been flying five years.”

I asked her, “What made you become a flight attendant?” She said, “I always wanted to become a flight attendant, and when I retired from teaching, I decided to try it, and it was the best thing I ever did.”

She told me many flight attendants had a similar story, and airlines loved hiring people for a second life career.

The Aviation Industry Values Life Experience

I thought that was just the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard in my life. An industry that values life experience? Sign me up.

As a child, I always wanted to be an olympic gymnast, and from the time I was 12, my mother told me I was “too old” and past my prime.

I know it probably sounds crazy, but with each passing year, I felt like my worth as a person was dwindling. That could not have been farther from the truth, but I didn’t know that at the time.

The day I met that flight attendant, I was on my way to training feeling kind of old. I wasn’t old then, and I’m still not old now, old is a state of mind, and we can get better with age.

Then, to enter into an industry that embraces aging made my heart soar.

Dreams Don’t Have An Expiration Date

Why is there an age limit on our dreams? There isn’t. If you always wanted to be a flight attendant, go for it. Even flight attendants that start at the ripe old age of 20 or 21, eventually age, and they accrue more seniority and the best perks of the job.

As a more mature flight attendant you will have plenty of co workers that are your age, younger than you and yes even older than you are too.

Being a flight attendant at a major airline has a low turnover rate. People stay in the flight attendant position because as you accrue seniority things get better and better.

The longer you stay at the job, the better the pay, the better destinations you can work, you accrue more vacation time, and so much more.

Most companies allow you to work as little or as much as you want (or your seniority allows) so it’s the kind of job you never want to stop doing.

Flight Attendant Age Of Retirement

The Legacy Airlines is where you notice it the most flight attendants of all ages. Legacy airlines have been around forever and a lot of the flight attendants have been with them for most of their lives. Gone are the days when you reached a certain age that you were forced to retire.

Flight attendants don’t even have a retirement age. Pilots, that’s a different story, they are flying the plane and they have an age limit for a reason.

There are flight attendants with 60 years seniority. That means if they started at 20 years of age, they are now 80. Some of those senior mamas and papas, they can work circles around me on an international flight.

I don’t know how those flight attendants do all those international flights. International flying is a once in a while thing for me because I don’t like the change in time zones. But somehow these people do it every single week.

They don’t look their age either, they are spry. Is it that the young of heart become flight attendants or does the flying keep them young? I’m not sure.

Flight Attendant Age Requirements

There is a minimum age to become a flight attendant, that is anywhere from 18 to 21 depending on the airline.

However, there is no American airline flight attendant age limit. Airlines are very conscious about diversity of all kinds and age is no exception. Things have changed so much in the history of the flight attendant career.
