Delta provides new hires with their base assignments before the seven-week flight attendant training program begins in Atlanta. Although Delta operates from multiple bases, every location may not be available to every training class.

Base options depend on Delta’s operational needs at that time. Available choices may also differ for Language of Destination flight attendants because their assignments must support specific routes and language requirements.

Your assigned base is where you report for trips and complete required A-Days. It does not have to be where you live, but getting to the base before check-in is your responsibility. That makes commuting time, flight availability, living expenses, and backup travel options important parts of evaluating any base assignment.

For details about when base assignment happens in relation to training, see the Delta Flight Attendant Training guide.

Delta does not make every flight attendant base available to every new-hire class. The locations offered depend on operational staffing needs at the time assignments are made. Language of Destination flight attendants may also see different options based on route and language requirements.

New hires receive their base assignment before training begins. If more than one base is available to your class, Delta will provide the applicable instructions for submitting or ranking your preferences.

Your assigned base becomes the location where you report for trips and required A-Days unless and until a transfer is awarded.

Before You Receive a Base Assignment

Before Delta assigns you a base, you first have to successfully move through the application, assessments, On-Demand Interview, and Event Day.

The Flight Attendant Interview Success Program gives you a complete preparation roadmap for the interview process so you can understand what airlines are evaluating and prepare before an invitation arrives.

Living in Base vs. Commuting

Your flight attendant base and your home address do not have to be in the same city. Living in base means living close enough to report for work without commuting by air. Commuting means traveling from your home city to your assigned base before your work trip begins.

Commuting can add travel time, additional expenses, and uncertainty to your schedule. Whether it is practical depends on your assigned base, schedule, transportation options, and personal circumstances.

For a closer look at how commuting works, read the guide to commuting as a flight attendant.

Your base affects much more than where you report for work. It can shape your commute, housing costs, time at home, schedule flexibility, and the way the flight attendant lifestyle fits into the rest of your life.

Delta Flight Attendant A-Days and Your Base

Delta uses A-Days as reserve availability days. During A-Days, flight attendants must be available for assignments according to Delta’s current scheduling and reporting requirements.

A-Days are work availability days, not days off. Your assigned base matters because that is where you must be able to report when required.

For a broader explanation of reserve schedules, how reserve works, and what new flight attendants should expect, read the Flight Attendant Reserve guide.

Seniority and Transferring Delta Flight Attendant Bases

Your first Delta flight attendant base does not necessarily have to be your permanent base. Flight attendants may be able to request a transfer when another base has available staffing and they meet Delta’s current transfer requirements.

A transfer is not guaranteed. Base availability can change with staffing, operational needs, hiring, and the number of flight attendants requesting a particular location.

How Seniority Affects Your Base

Seniority plays an important role in flight attendant schedules and assignments. A base described as more “senior” or “junior” refers to the relative seniority of the flight attendants working there.

That balance can change over time as flight attendants transfer, retire, and new hires enter the system. A base’s reputation for being senior or junior should not be treated as a permanent condition.

Transferring to Another Delta Base

If you want to move to another base after you are hired, follow Delta’s current transfer process and eligibility requirements. Transfer opportunities depend on which bases need additional flight attendants at that time.

Until a transfer is actually awarded, your current base remains your assigned work location.

Delta Flight Attendant Bases FAQs

Can you choose your base as a Delta flight attendant?

You should not assume that every Delta base will be available to you. Delta provides base availability information before training, and the options offered depend on operational needs. Language of Destination flight attendants may have different base options.

When do Delta flight attendants receive their base assignments?

Delta currently provides new hires with their training date and base assignment after successful completion of the required pre-employment process and before the seven-week training program begins.

Does training in Atlanta mean you will be based there?

No. Delta conducts initial flight attendant training in Atlanta, but your training location and assigned flight attendant base are separate.

What is the best Delta flight attendant base for new hires?

There is no single best Delta base for every new hire. Available assignments vary by class and operational need, and the right fit depends on the individual flight attendant’s circumstances.

Can you live somewhere other than your assigned base?

Yes. Flight attendants may live outside their assigned base, but they remain responsible for reporting to their base on time and meeting Delta’s current scheduling and attendance requirements.

Are all Delta bases open to new hires?

No. A location appearing on Delta’s base list does not mean it will be available to every new-hire class. Base options depend on Delta’s staffing and operational needs at the time assignments are made.
