Hello, my name is Deanna Castro the creator of Future Flight Attendant. I Created Future Flight Attendant because really there is no better job than being a flight attendant. Being a flight attendant isn’t even a job. It’s a career and an enjoyable one at that!
For the past 15 years, I’ve gotten paid to travel to exotic locations. I have even been able to take my entire family with me to resorts that are upwards of $500 a night for free.
I sat straight reserve for six years, had two children, survived a merger, and a world wide pandemic throughout my career. It hasn’t always been easy, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Let’s Start At the Beginning
Back in the early 2000s, I lived in Hawaii, the most beautiful place in the world, and I was miserable. I worked at a soul-sucking job, and I knew there had to be more to life than calling people and trying to save them money on long-distance phone calls.
I Had to Psyche Myself Up Every Single Day
The only way I could get up in the morning and go to work was to tell myself that I was making a difference in these people’s lives by saving them money.
“Aloha, it’s Deanna from Sprint. I want to share with you how to save money on your long-distance plan.” I either got hung up on or screamed at, or maybe they would say, “I’m listening,” and let me give them my spiel.
The Job Sucked, But It Paid the Bills
I kept going day after day because I had to pay the bills. Hawaii is not cheap, yo! But there are only so many times someone can tell you to “F Off” before you begin to feel dead inside.
A Glimmer of Hope
One day as I was checking out job listings, I came across a Hawaiian Airlines Cattle Call. Cattle Calls were when they invited people to come and bring their resumes and have a big group interview right there that day. There were no online applications, no live phone calls, no video interviews, or any of that stuff because it didn’t exist yet within the industry.
I looked at the ad, circled it with a heart in the newspaper. That job sounded like a dream to me. Then the internal dialogue started. “I don’t speak Japanese. They have to speak Japanese.” There was nothing that said I had to speak Japanese. “I didn’t go to school to become a flight attendant!” “I have no customer service skills.” Yes, I did, more than average, and I didn’t even didn’t realize it!!!
My internal dialog was too strong. I crumbled up that newspaper ad and threw it in the trash right along with all of my hopes and dreams.
I’ve Grown So Much Since Those Early Days
Back then, I wasn’t who I am today. I didn’t know I could do anything that I set my mind to. Just because I didn’t think I could figure out how to get hired, I gave up my dream, just like that.
The Universe Had My Back
One day this temp walked into my job, and it was my job to train him. We hit it off right away. He told me he was a flight attendant for United Airlines but on leave.
9/11 shook the airline industry to its core, and Airlines furloughed so many junior flight attendants. Notably, 911 hit United Airlines hard because United Airlines Flight # 175 crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
I told my new co-worker, “I always wanted to be a flight attendant, but I can’t.” He was all, “What!?!?! You’re perfect for the job!”
Hold up, wait a minute. Did an actual flight attendant say I WAS THE PERFECT FLIGHT ATTENDANT CANDIDATE?!?!?
The Perfect Words When I Needed to Hear Them
When he told me I was the perfect candidate, a switch went off in my brain. A light turned on in my head. I quietly decided that this was a sign and I was going to be a flight attendant.
It was a few years that I had to wait until the airlines were hiring again. However, I was determined to make this happen. When 2005 was just about over, I had my resume perfected, and I applied. Do you know what happened? I landed my CJO (Back then, the term was “Invited to training”) on my very first try!
During my interview, the recruiter and I ended up jumping up and down. We hugged for a full minute when she handed me my training packet. I was shocked, and I’ll admit it, I cried. Even though I was a defeated telemarketer, yet I was going to make one great flight attendant.
I Am YOUR Sign
Let me tell you, and I would not be here today 14 years later, living the life of my dreams, if a flight attendant didn’t tell me what I did not know. He told me I was the perfect flight attendant candidate!
